Suzan Noyes

Suzan chooses natural subject matter - trees, foliage, floral, select landscapes. Picturesque buildings and abandoned vehicles also intrigue her. She has shown and sold her paintings since 1977, having exhibited work in numerous solo, group and juried shows over the last forty years.

Her chosen media is soft pastel or acrylics. She has also worked in watercolor, colored pencil and charcoal.

The pastel paintings incorporate thin acrylic washes as an under-painting prior to applying hard pastel under finish layers of soft pastel. She prefers 300 lb. cold press watercolor paper or heavy sanded papers for the pastels.

Her acrylics are painted over gesso on masonite or board. She incorporates up to thirty layered washes of thinned paint plus glaze, building a complex base while keeping extreme highlights fresh.

Suzan chooses simple yet striking subjects and strong compositions with interesting positive and negative space. She balances complementary colors and prefers a dramatic light source.
